Kandy
Kandy is a city in the hills of Sri Lanka. It is Known for its temple,
its lake and its peaceful atmosphere. I visited Kandy as a student and the experience stayed with me longer than I expected. When I first arrived, I did not have many expectations. I thought I would visit the main sights and then leave, but Kandy offered something more. The city is Surrounded by green hills and its center there's a beautiful lake. The environment feels so calm and refreshing.
One morning I walked to the lake before the day become warm. The air was fresh and the water was still. A few local people were sitting quietly, offering flowers. No one was in a rush for the first time in a long while.I felt completely present.
Later, I visited the Temple of the Scared Tooth Relic. I removed my shoes and walked inside. The atmosphere was silent and respectful. Many people had traveled from far away just to spend a few moments in prayer. I did not understand every ritual but I could feel the sincerity around me.
What affected me most, however, was not any single builling or view. It was the guiet kindness of the people. All the small moments that I experienced was so satisfying and mind refreshing.
Whenever I think of Kandy, I do not first remember a temple or a lake. I remember how it felt to be a stranger and treated like family. That city did not change my plans or my schedules, but it changed something quieter inside me. It reminded me that travel is not only about seeing new places. It is also about learning how to be still, how to listen and how to receive kindness without feeling the need to repay it. For that I really feel so greatful. I love kandy!
